I have been to China many times. I lived in Hong Kong twice, I lived in Shanghai briefly, and I have taken all of those opportunities to wander around China while I was there. Even so, it’s an insanely huge country with an incredibly rich and diverse geography and local cultures. The more I travel in China, the more I realize how much I don’t know.
In the interest of not provoking political arguments, I’m including all of China’s main disputed areas in this list.

Because it’s such a geographically large country, there are just so many places that I haven’t had the time or money to visit yet. Here are ten of them, in no particular order other than how I thought them up.
- Visit Lhasa in Tibet
I had been trying to add Tibet into my trip during the one month that I backpacked through China and Russia, but it didn’t seem like it was going to fit financially or time-wise. Until I arrived in Chengdu and realized that I’d looked into the travel arrangements all wrong.
Well, it didn’t happen that time around, but it really only made me want to visit even more.
I think for this trip I’d like to a 5-7 day guided tour. Lhasa is the place that I want to visit the most, but I would also like to get out of the city and see some of the beautiful countryside and take a peek at Mt Everest.
